East of Bistroff, the 3rd Battalion headed to the commune of Freybouse on November 20th, 1944, with the goal of taking the town. Company K would initialize the battle for the town, starting at 1300. Spilling over to the 21st, Freybouse was eventually taken by the battalion.
However, in the midst of it all, Charles’s life would sadly be taken as well, as he died in action on November 22nd, 1944. He was 19 years old. His death was a brutal one: he suffered an explosion in which the lower half of his body was completely shattered. Charles was reported buried in a temporary U.S. Military Cemetery at the commune of Limey on November 26th, 1944, at 1100. He was interred at Plot J, Row 12, Grave 286 of the cemetery.
